[EIP 2011] Following a Febrile UTI Should Children be Thoroughly Investigated

Recorded: EIP 2011 ● Language: English ● Duration: 21 minutes Topic: Pediatric Nephrology

Speaker: GIOVANNI MONTINI, Consultant in Pediatric Nephrology, Nephrology and Dialysis unit, Department of Pediatrics, Sant’Orsola hospital, Bologna, Italy

Learning Objectives: At the end of the session participants will: (1) Understand that the relationship between febrile UTIs and chronic kidney damage has become less certain and that the majority of children with chronic kidney damage have congenital renal hypo-dysplasia, often in association with VUR. (2) Be aware that limited investigation in the form of a renal ultrasound performed on all children following a febrile UTI, can reasonably exclude all major nephro-urologic malformations (3) Be aware of the possible side effects of imaging: higher radiation dose, increased psychological stress and a major economic burden
